About us
Dr. Yao Guo leads the Perception, Cognition, and Behavior (PCB) group at Institute of Medical Robotics (IMR), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU).
Dr. Guo received his B.S. degree in automation and M.S. degree in communication and information system from Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China in 2011 and 2014, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. degree in robotic vision from the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong in 2018. His postdoctoral training was at the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, Imperial College London, London, UK from 2018 to 2020. He was the tenure-track Assistant Professor with the Institute of Medical Robotics, School of Biomedical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China from 2020 to 2023. Since 2024, he has been the tenure-track Associate Professor.
Dr. Guo engages in frontier theoretical research in areas such as human behavior and cognition analysis, robot vision, and human-robot interaction, while also focuses on the development of intelligent diagnosis and assessment algorithms for neurological diseases and the development of implantable surgical robotic systems for flexible brain-computer interfaces. He was selected for IEEE Senior Member (2026), Top 2% Scientists in Industrial Engineering and Automation (2025), the Shanghai Oriental Talent Program Top-notch Project (2025), Shanghai Pujiang Talent Program (2022), IEEE ICRA 2024 New Generation Star Project (2024), and awarded the Second Prize of the Shanghai Rehabilitation Science and Technology Award (2025) and the Second Prize of the Maternal and Child Health Science and Technology Award (2025). In recent five years (2021-2026), he has published over 50 papers in internationally renowned journals and top conferences in the field of medical robotics, including 30 as first author or corresponding author.
Perception, Cognition, and Behavior (PCB) group is one of fundamental research centers of IMR@SJTU. IMR-PCB aims to endow robots with human-like intelligence. However, the cognitive and replicative capabilities of robots and artificial intelligence are often underestimated. Perception and cognition are essential components of both teleoperated and autonomous robots, enabling attention-based control, reactive behaviors, situational awareness, and seamless human-robot interaction. By leveraging the latest advances in computational and experimental neuroscience, IMR-PCB focuses on the fundamental principles of brain function and their practical applications in human-machine symbiotic systems.

Institute of Medical Robotics (IMR)
Institute of Medical Robotics is an interdisciplinary research platform at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, founded by Professor Guang-Zhong Yang, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the founding Editor-in-Chief of Science Robotics. Focusing on the early diagnosis and personalized treatment of major diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases, the Institute brings together the latest advances in robotics and related technologies to drive transformation in the fields of surgery, rehabilitation, and hospital automation. The Institute aims to lead innovative research in key technologies of medical robotics, develop a new generation of medical equipment centered on robotics and artificial intelligence, establish a multidisciplinary talent training and industrial incubation base, and promote the clinical translation of innovative robotic technologies.
